Hugh Gaywood-Eyre is a self-taught artist originally from England, now based in the Wairarapa, New Zealand, where he has lived since 2007. With a background rooted in family traditions of needlework and soft furnishings, he has long felt at ease with thread and textile, embracing the intricate detail and flexibility the medium offers. As his eyesight has declined, he has transitioned from larger textile works into mosaics—a natural evolution supported by his strong sketching foundation.
Working with broken glass and ceramics, he creates tesserae that echo the rhythm and movement of tapestry, balancing geometric precision with organic flow. His work draws inspiration from nature, travel, and ancient symbolism, particularly Egyptian and Moorish design. Influenced by European art movements and rich visual cultures abroad, his pieces aim to capture fleeting moments of beauty—offering viewers a quiet, joyful pause in the everyday.
