Two words provide the cornerstone to Jo Constable’s life in art:
PUNK. ROCK.
Jo’s teenage years as a punk opened her up to “free creative expression.” It taught her to
improvise and experiment with any available materials. That freedom to play feeds her
practice today.
Growing up in Manchester in the 1980s, left an indelible impression on her creative life.
Her hometown, the epicenter of Britain’s industrial revolution, was in a state of disrepair.
Huge Victorian buildings lay abandoned and the tough, working-class, had to be resilient,
making-do with limited resources. Against this backdrop, deep in the city’s darkest recesses
an underground music and art scene flourished and young Jo relished that.
Despite now living in New Zealand’s rural Wairarapa, the gritty city vibe of her youth still
influences her personal work. She is attracted to industrial patina’s over prettiness and often
draws on punk’s rough edges for her inspiration.
