Lisa is a Wairarapa potter and geochemist and makes domestic ware and sculptural ceramics. She has developed glazes that tell stories through colour, layering, and flow. Inspired by the mountains, rivers, and landscapes she encounters while tramping in New Zealand, her glazes are often named after places, including her West Coast celadons Heaphy Gold, Karamea Blue, and Glacier. Her latest matte glaze, Te Manahuna (Mackenzie Basin), reflects the basin’s yellow and green grasses and red seed heads, while its bright blue break echoes the colour of the roadside weed Viper’s Bugloss.
Lisa makes simple repetitive forms in clay playing with surfaces to enhance the glazes. She throws on the wheel, hand & slab builds and slip casts depending on the function or form like the fit in your hand, the rim over your lips.
Come along to Lisa’s open studio, pick up the pots, and see how they fit you.
