Trained in graphic design and a former tutor in Adobe Illustrator, Nick Cottrell’s art is multidisciplinary.. Having previously worked primarily with photography and vector graphics, he has purposefully stepped away from the crisp finish of computer aided design to a more natural, organic style of hand drawing using Japanese brush pens and is venturing into wood turning and pyrography.
He has been part of exhibits at New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts and Zealandia Ecosanctuary. He bases much of his work from his own photography and observations having spent nearly a decade as the Wildfowl & Wetlands Trust’s unofficial photographer, where he’d be called upon to document celebrity visits like those from David Attenborough. As such, nature is a central feature of his art. For him creating art is a conduit to leave a piece of yourself in the world, while also connecting with nature/kete taiao, which resonates for so many people.
